Since its founding in 2008, Knewton has been exclusively using AWS to power its adaptive learning platform. Peter Norton and Dave Zwieback will share the realities of running completely "in the cloud", and specific design patterns that improve scalability, availability, performance, and security in cloud-based systems. They'll cover topics such as EBS vs ephemeral (instance) storage; auto-scaling; automated deployment and configuration management; and decreasing instance boot time through AMI "stamping".
Peter Norton is an Systems Engineer at Knewton. He's been focusing on Linux/Unix, network, and database engineering and administration for the past 17 years. Prior to Knewton, he was a Systems Administrator (Unix and Database) at D.E. Shaw & Co., and an Engineer at Citigroup. He's the co-author of "Professional Red Hat Enterprise Linux" and "Beginning Python"; and an NYLUG officer.
Dave Zwieback is the head of Infrastructure at Knewton. He's been managing large-scale mission-critical infrastructure for over 15 years. Prior to Knewton, he managed Unix systems at D.E. Shaw & Co., enterprise monitoring tools at Morgan Stanley, and ran an infrastructure architecture consultancy.
